A Fond Farewell

This week, we said a sad but fond farewell to the school’s chaplaincy coordinator Mrs Rachel Ross Russell.

Mrs Ross Russell has been a member of the school community for many years: first as a parent and governor and for the last seven years as our chaplaincy coordinator – a role which has become central to our school’s ethos.

She has empowered staff to deliver outstanding daily collective worship; provided regular liturgies in the chapel and invited in parents to pray for our community.

She has always been willing to give up her own time for her work running pilgrimages to Rome multiple times and a mission to Moldova. She has also held chaplaincy weekends and retreat days for each year group.

She has never had a free lunchtime working at SFX as she has always run clubs such as Big Questions and Mini Vinnies. She has encouraged Faith in Action, with fundraising from 24 hour famines to collecting food for the food bank.

She has worked with many students individually, guiding them through difficult times.

Clare Masterman, Assistant Associate Headteacher responsible for the Christian Life in the School said, “She cares so much for all the children and staff at SFX that they are at the heart of everything that she does.”

Students were keen to say goodbye to Mrs Ross Russell their way, in a number of farewell lunchtime events. Eva Denning, Year 8, said, “She is very approachable and she is kind. She makes the clubs enjoyable. You can talk to her about anything and she will listen, give advice and get help for you if needed. We will miss her very much.”

Mrs Ross Russell said, “It has been a privilege and a joy to have worked at SFX for the past 7 years as our School Chaplaincy Coordinator. I am taking with me many happy memories from meeting and working with so many lovely members of staff and students across the years. It has been amazing to be able to share my faith with our school community, and I hope encourage others in theirs.

Both of my boys were students at SFX and our school has been a huge blessing to us all.

I pray that SFX will continue to be a shining light in the world of education and that the Christian ethos of our school will continue to be at the heart of our school community. Thank you to all those who have been a part of my time here, stay safe and go well.”
