At SFX we have a number of events integrated in to the school careers programme. We warmly encourage you to get in touch if you would like to support SFX with the careers curriculum.

At St Francis Xavier School we provide students with comprehensive careers information, advice and guidance to enable them to become effective decision-makers and to plan for their future careers.

We seek to raise their aspirations and awareness of all the options and opportunities available to them. This is under the Leadership of Mrs Bowman who is the Careers Lead supported by Mrs Pratt (Pastoral Leader).

The school evaluates its careers programme through pupil and parent voice as well as through evaluating the quality of education within the PSHE and Careers programme. The school assesses itself regularly against the Gatsby Benchmarks which allows us to evaluate the impact of our careers programme on pupils.

Careers and Curriculum

Each curriculum area in school supports the overall Careers Curriculum. We also use information about our local labour market to support both our Careers Curriculum and the subjects we offer as well as providing key information for our students as part of our advice and guidance.

Local labour market

When considering future career options it’s important to have a good understanding of the employment prospects within that industry.

Careerometer can be used to explore and compare key information about occupations, help you learn about different occupations and identify potential careers.

It provides access to a selection of UK headline data relating to pay, weekly hours of work and future employment prospects for different occupations, as well as description of the occupation.

Simply type in the title of the job you are interested in and the widget provides a series of options from which you can select the most relevant to you. You can then look up another two occupations and compare. You can also select ‘display the UK average’ and compare the information with the occupation you have selected.



New for 2022: ‘Get the Jump’ 

The ‘Get the Jump’ Skills for Life Campaign is a new resource for 2022. It brings together, for the first time, all education and training choices for young people in one place.

The site includes all the choices that are available for young people for post-16 and beyond. This enables students to make informed choices about their next step and choose the path that is right for them. It covers all education and training options and spotlights technical education routes such as T Levels, Traineeships and Apprenticeships as well as routes into A-Levels, Supported Internships and Higher education.

Careers education 

Our belief at St Francis Xavier's is that all pupils are entitled to Careers Education and Guidance which:-

  • is independent and impartial
  • is easily accessible
  • is structured and forms an integral part of pupils’ overall education
  • recognises the contribution of others, particularly parents, to this process
  • respects the confidentiality of personal information   

All students are made aware of their entitlement through tutor-led activities in form time, assemblies, parent information events and the school website.

Careers Education is an integral part of the PSCHE programme for years 7 - 11. Subject teachers are also encouraged to talk with pupils about their career aspirations and can refer pupils to careers staff to gather further information.

Post-16 Information Evening, attended by local FE providers, employers and apprenticeship specialists.


In addition, regular events are organised for students throughout the school year, including STEM-related projects with local employers Cummins Inc, Enterprise projects, Mock Interview Day, subject-related in school talks led by employers and colleges/universities and visits to various careers and skills events and local colleges and universities.

All the above aim to provide students with information about the breadth of careers and study options available. For more information please see our Careers Programme.

During Year 9 students will be choosing their GCSE subjects.  We will assist in the decision-making process and students will spend time exploring their options both in Key Stage 4 and beyond.  They will be encouraged to research career ideas and widen their knowledge of the world of work. They will also receive advice and guidance on how to choose GCSE options.  All students will have the opportunity to explore their skills, qualities and the decision making process during our comprehensive PSHCE programme.

Staff from local colleges and training providers attend parents’ evenings offering parents and pupils the opportunity to discuss progression routes. Year 10 students will participate in “Enrichment Activities” during the summer term, these are based upon the importance of lifelong learning and gaining an understanding of what an employer looks for when recruiting, some students will receive individual careers guidance interviews. In year 10, pupils get the opportunity to meet with local colleges as part of the Enrichment programme

Year 11 is the last year of school for students and they have to decide what they want to do next. Our Careers support can help by providing information, advice and guidance on all the Post 16 Options. All students receive individual careers guidance interviews in Year 11 as they decide on their Post 16 Options. Students are offered the opportunity of one to one guidance with an independent qualified careers practitioner. In year 11, representatives from colleges and training providers deliver presentations to pupils.

Staff, students and parents/carers will be involved in the development of the CEIAG (Careers Education, Information and Guidance) and we will also look to business partners and other stakeholders for support in our commitment to deliver quality CEIAG.
